Halloween 2009

Another flashback post to get me caught up on blogging...

With the packers coming the week of Halloween I didn't have the time or the energy to make new costumes for everyone. Not that I really planned on it anyway--I figured the costumes I made last year still fit everyone so I would just make the kids wear them again. The boys didn't like the idea, especially Gavan. Gary and I decided not to dress up because we really needed the packers to take as much stuff as possible. So having them pack our costumes would save us space in the car.

I found glow stick swords and fake scars at the dollar store for the kids to add to their costumes.
Sadie always picked suckers for her treat when she had a choice. She was happiest when she had one for each hand.
I had to tell Alyssa she was a pirate princess in order for her to go along with it.

We were exhausted by the time it came around to go trick or treating. That morning, we unpacked my parents storage unit, with the help of Cameron. We hit the trunk-or-treat, and then went around the block, calling it a night.

Candy Corn

I don't know what has gotten into me lately but I have become quite the crafty goddess. Tonight I made candy corn sugar cookies. They turned out pretty good for a first attempt at making them.

Here is how to do it. First make your favorite sugar cookies recipe. Then divide the dough in half and color it yellow. Take the other half and divide it into 2/3 and 1/3 and color the 2/3 orange.

Take 1/2 of each color and make them into logs about 7" in length. Place the yellow down first and flatten it, then place the orange on top of the yellow and flatten it. Finish with the white on top and flatten it. It will look something like this.

Next tapper the side up to form a pyramid/triangle like this.
Wrap in saran wrap and chill for about 4 hours. Use a knife or dental floss to cut into 1/2" thick pieces and bake.

Next time I will make the orange darker, it turned a little pink after it cooked. I will also let them chill longer so they cut smoother.

I think this is going to be a new Halloween tradition. It was so easy.

Halloween Party

Last night our ward had a Hallowen party, so we all dressed up. This was the first year that I went ALL out and made a costume for everyone. I will post better pictures of our costumes later but here are some from the party for now.

Gary and parrot Sadie. On Halloween she will actually wear her bird legs but it was too hot to wear them for the party.
Sadie, Alyssa and me waiting at the fishing pond.

Gavan fishing, Jack watching.
Alyssa showing us her "face painting" on her hands. Stars, pink of course.
Jack getting his face paint, he kept the pirate theme and got a scare and a skull.
Jack and Alyssa doing the cake walk.

It is nice to be done with the costumes. It was a LOT of work but I think they turned out pretty good. I am a perfectionist when it comes to sewing. I have a hard time remember that these are JUST costumes and not prom dresses and they don't need to be perfect. I don't know if I will ever tackle this kind of project again...only time will tell.

Now lets see if I have it in me to sew our Christmas jammies too.

Holloween treats

For Fun Friday this past week for dinner we made hot dog mummies, instead of pigs in a blanket. The kids thought it was great.

For the ward activity Gary got all Martha Stewart on me and made a spider web out of rice crispies. It turned out so good!

Pumpkin Patch

Every year we take the kids to the local pumpkin patch and let them choose their own pumpkin. Here are the pictures from this year.
The kids loved the maze. The boys were cheated and stood above the bales so they could see what way they should go before they entered.

Sadie enjoyed the hay too!

The boys looked long and hard for the best pumpkins they could find.
Alyssa was the first one to find a pumpkin.
Then Sadie.
The girls waiting for the boys.

Everyone waiting for Gavan to choose his pumpkin.
Gavan finally chose his pumpkin and he could barely carry it.
We're done!

Alyssa picked the littlest pumpkin in the patch. The boys thought it was funny that even Sadie's pumpkin was bigger than Alyssa's.

We decided to be lazy with the pumpkin carving this year. So, we used vinyl instead, since I have connections and all. Here are the finished products.
The boys went for scary faces.

I chose a spider for Sadie.

I chose a witch for Alyssa.
